Coney Dog (Detroit Style)

This is another one of those things that growing up, I just thought you could get everywhere. They are rare enough outside of the midwest, and nonexistant in the rest of the country, at least in my searches. There are a few places in Minnesota that have them, famously The Gopher Bar in Saint Paul, but they are not the omnipresent food that they are in metro Detroit. Some of my favorites back home would be Lafayette in Detroit and Lapumas in Rochester Hills.

Ingredients

  • 4 all-beef hot dogs
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 1/4 tsp cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Finely chopped onion and yellow mustard for topping

Instructions

  1. Cook ground beef, onion, and garlic in skillet until browned.
  2. Stir in tomato paste, mustard, and spices. Simmer with a splash of water for 10 mins.
  3. Grill or boil hot dogs and toast buns.
  4. Place hot dog in bun, top with meat sauce, mustard, and raw onion.
